As I sat amidst the chaos of delayed flights and the incessant downpour in Dubai, April 19, 2024, seemed determined to test my patience. Doubt lingered in my mind like a stubborn fog, questioning the feasibility of reaching Abu Dhabi. But as the clock struck 15:30, a glimmer of hope emerged amidst the emotional turmoil, signaling the beginning of my journey, finally, towards the promised destination of NYU Abu Dhabi.
The Counselors Fly-in Orientation Program at NYU Abu Dhabi is a transformative experience designed to immerse guidance counselors in the vibrant academic and cultural environment of the university. From the moment counselors step foot on the breathtaking campus, nestled on Saadiyat Island, they are greeted with warm hospitality and a wealth of opportunities to engage with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds. Through interactive workshops, campus tours, and discussions with admissions professionals, counselors gain invaluable insights into the distinctive academic programs, innovative research initiatives, and global perspectives that define NYU Abu Dhabi.
I would like you all to envisage the stunning architecture blend of modernity with traditional Arabian influences, as one strolls through lush courtyards and state-of-the-art facilities as we as exchanging ideas with brilliant minds from around the world during thought-provoking seminars and cultural exchanges. This is what awaits many of our students at ISZ.
This firsthand experience allows us as counselors to not only grasp the academic rigor and supportive community at NYU Abu Dhabi, but also to envision how such an environment could profoundly enrich the educational journey of students at ISZ.
Day 2 was characterised by an outing to the prestigious Mazara, organic farm that boasts of an array of drip irrigated crops and animals. Yours truly had the pleasure of feeding camals and feasting on freshly picked fruits and vegetables.
We concluded our outing with a visit to the Great Mosque, I couldn’t help but reflect on the cultural richness of Abu Dhabi and the potential it holds for our students’ educational journeys. The grandeur of the mosque served as a poignant reminder of the diverse experiences and opportunities awaiting them at NYU. It was a day filled with not just exploration, but also inspiration, as we immersed ourselves in the vibrant tapestry of this dynamic city, envisioning the impact it could have on the lives of our graduating Year 13 cohort.
Day 3 of the Fly-in Counselors Orientation at NYU Abu Dhabi commenced with a comprehensive overview of the application process and entry requirements presented by Eudora Okine, the Associate Director of Admissions for Undergraduate Admissions. Her insights provided valuable clarity to attendees, shedding light on the intricacies of applying to NYUAD.
Alumni Panel
Following the admissions session, attendees had the privilege of engaging with an Alumni Panel comprised of former NYU Abu Dhabi students. Notably, Mohammed Amine Belarbi, the founder of Cyberleak, a prominent cybersecurity firm in the UAE, shared his journey and highlighted how NYU Abu Dhabi fostered his entrepreneurial spirit and innovation. His narrative resonated deeply, illustrating the university’s commitment to nurturing talent and fostering leadership.
Admitted Students and Parents Orientation.
This segment of the day was dedicated to admitted students and their parents, providing them with firsthand insights into life at NYU Abu Dhabi. The session not only addressed practical aspects of living in Abu Dhabi but also emphasized the cultural vibrancy of the city and the university community.
Closing Session and Dinner.
The concluded with an informative session focusing on cultural adaptation and identifying best-fit students for NYU Abu Dhabi. Attendees were provided with valuable resources to navigate their transition to life in Abu Dhabi. The evening culminated with a delightful dinner at Beirut Sur Mer restaurant, a Lebanese restaurant.
Overall, Day 3 of the Fly-in Counselors Orientation at NYU Abu Dhabi offered a holistic perspective on the university experience, from the application process to alumni success stories and cultural immersion. The event proved instrumental in equipping attendees with the knowledge and resources to support prospective students in their educational journey at NYU Abu Dhabi.
Day 4 orientation at NYU Abu Dhabi was insightful and inspiring. We were honored by the presence of Carol Brandt, Director of Global Education, who highlighted NYUAD’s commitment to fostering global mindedness through exchange programs across its campuses worldwide, including London, 2Washington, Prague, Sydney, France, and Singapore.
Dr. Nancy W. Cleason then shed light on the transformative role of AI in human interaction and society, emphasizing how we can harness it to enrich our human experience.
The tour of the campus showcased its awe-inspiring state-of-the-art facilities and resources, leaving us impressed and motivated.
As an ISZ Counselor, the key takeaway for me was the paramount importance of educational excellence in securing a place at NYU Abu Dhabi. Exceptional academic achievement opens doors to opportunities like 100% bursaries, including flights and visas, 8for outstanding students. It’s crucial for us as teachers at ISZ to educate students about these opportunities early on, starting as early as year 9, while also nurturing critical thinking, creativity, and global awareness.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Ango Mwakisu, Eudora Okine, and their incredible team at NYU Abu Dhabi for organizing this enriching experience.
